Where the surgeon's hand meets the engineer's logic.
Endocrine and robotic surgery at the bedside; artificial intelligence, bioprinting, and quantum-medical imaging at the bench — a single practice across five frontiers, anchored at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital.
A surgeon shaped by engineering.

Hyeong Won Yu is a Professor of Surgery at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, specializing in endocrine surgery — thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal — with particular expertise in robotic operations via the bilateral axillo-breast approach (BABA).
His path is unusual: a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering at Yonsei University preceded medical school. That early grounding in engineering shapes everything that follows — a clinician who reads CT images and tensor networks with equal fluency, who treats the operating theater as a system to be measured, modeled, and improved.
Beyond the clinic, his work spans 3D bioprinted parathyroid tissue, deep-learning surgical video analysis, genetic and molecular characterization of thyroid cancer, and — most recently — quantum medical image super-resolution.

Five frontiers, one practice.
Research that begins in the operating theater and returns there — translating bench discoveries into measurable improvements in surgical care.
Robotic Endocrine Surgery
BABA robotic thyroidectomy, parathyroidectomy, and adrenalectomy. Decade-long contributions to technique evolution, training models, and outcome optimization.
Surgical AI & Video Analysis
Vision-based recurrent laryngeal nerve localization, automated instrument tracking, and decade-scale analysis of energy device use in 5,000+ thyroidectomies.
Genetic Analysis in Thyroid Cancer
Driver gene mutations, BRAF V600E and TERT promoter variants, circulating tumor cells, multi-omics characterization, and clinical correlates of molecular signatures in papillary and undifferentiated thyroid carcinoma.
Quantum Medical Imaging
Photon-counting CT super-resolution using QuantumGAN with measurement-based compilation. Quantum image encoding via Fourier-based methods.
3D Bio-Printing
Tissue printing of transplantable human parathyroid patches for in-vivo engraftment and hormone secretion — bridging bench and bedside.
